TOKYO DISNEY RESORT Tokyo, Japan Disney & Oriental Land Company Hotels in Tokyo
Resort News - (6/25/09) A new photo update from Tokyo Disneyland can be found at Westcoaster this week. (4/15/09) The next time to visit Tokyo Disney, be sure to bring your Nintendo DS with you, as shoppers visiting the Ikspiari will be able to download a free “interactive shopping guide” onto their DS starting April 25th. (4/3/09) The Oriental Land Company was happy to announce that the total number of visitors to the resort in 2008 hit an all time record high of 27.2 million, soaring up 7% from 2007. (3/30/09) The Oriental Land Company has named Executive Director Kyoichiro Uenishi as their new President, in a move to shift towards younger leadership. I’m not sure what tha is all about as the new President is 51 and is replacing a 62 year old. (2/19/09) A couple of good photo updates from the Tokyo Disney parks has been posted this week over at Theme Park Review and MiceChat, which first of which includes a lot of pictures of local Japanese guests coming to the park dressed up as Disney characters. (2/9/09) The Oriental Land Company reports that the Tokyo Disney Resort expects record profits this year based on very strong results from the first three quarters. (12/31/08) For anyone planning a trip to the Tokyo Disneyland Resort, we’ve posted the list of expected or planned attraction closures for the first half of 2009 down below under each of the park sections. Of special note however is a planned rehab of Space Mountain for just over 2 months, even through the ride was just given a major cosmetic facelift not that long ago. Perhaps they’ve got a new surprise in store, since it’s odd that it never received an on-board soundtrack the last time around. Anyone know more? (12/26/08) While the Japanese economy has been failing for the last few years, Tokyo Disneyland has still been reporting record numbers of visitors to their parks as a day at the theme parks is considers to be a cheaper escape than a night on the town in Tokyo, even at the price of paying $500 for an annual pass. Oriental Land Company is warry however than eventually even their success could falter and they will “offer new attractions to keep growing.” You can read more here.

Park News - (3/15/09) According to what I’ve heard Tokyo Disneyland will be closing down the Toontown Jolly Trolly for good starting April 14th. It seems the land’s pathways are just too crowded, with too many guests stepping right in front of the Trolley too frequently. (2/17/09) All new pictures from the Tokyo Disney Resort have been posted to Westcoaster.

2009 - Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek - (3/15/09) The new Monsters Inc. attraction at Tokyo Disneyland has soft-opened to the public and you can see a could of good video clips of it embedded below, uploaded by Joe’s Tokyo Disney Resort Photo Site. The first video shows off the queue and some queue videos while the second shows off the ride itself. This is all a month in advance of the ride’s official opening date of April 15th, 2009.
(1/19/07) If this piece of concept artwork from Disney's annual stock report is any indication, the new Monsters ride under construction in Tokyo will be quite impressive. From the looks of things guests wil l be taken for a ride through Monsteropolis armed with a Flashlight to scare away the monsters. Complete with a pair of swiveling cars, the concept looks like a merger of the Toy Story Mania idea mixed with Universal's Men In Black. (3/7/06) Screamscape has received confirmation that a new Monsters, Inc. ride is on the way to Tomorrowland for 2009. The press release states that guests will “be able to participate in a game of hide-and-seek at the Monsters, Inc. building with the little girl Boo, Mike, Sulley, and other characters featured in the movie.” The ride will cost an estimated $88 million (10 billion Yen).
2011 - Mickey’s Philharmagic - Confirmed - (11/5/08) Oriental Land Company has just announced that they will open Mickey’s Philharmagic at Tokyo Disneyland in 2011. The popular attraction from Florida’s Magic Kingdom will be placed into Fantasyland, replacing the current Mickey Mouse Review show that will close down on May 25th, 2009.
2011 - Cinderella Walk-Through - Confirmed - (5/8/09) OLC confirms today that they will build a new walk-through attraction inside Cinderella’s Castle that will tell the story through dioramas and paintings. In short, it sounds like they are getting a Cinderella themed version of the Sleeping Beauty walk-through attraction that was rebuilt and reopened at Disneyland in late 2008. The official name of the attraction has yet to be decided, but it will include a trip through the Grand Ballroom. The estimated cost of this attraction is 2 billion Yen.
2012-2014 - New Tomorrowland - Rumor - (11/5/08) With the announcement of Philharmagic coming in 2011, it seems certain that any plans for Tomorrowland will have to wait a little longer. (10/22/08) With the new Monsters Inc. attraction on the horizon for 2009, many have wondered just what was next for Tokyo Disneyland. Apparently the Imagineers have been hard at work coming up with ideas for a massive remodel of the rest of Tomorrowland. This isn’t the first time Tokyo has wanted to create a Tomorrowland 2.0… way back before Tokyo DisneySea was announced they were looking at creating a very high-tech neon-filled stylized concept that was nicknamed Sci-Fi City, one concept of which was Cyber-Mid, a clone of Rock ‘n Roller Coaster enclosed in a giant neon pyramid with the storyline that guests would be beamed into the chaos of the internet. A fun aspect of this from what I was told was that the launch tunnel would feature a visual effect for the spectators that might remind you of the old Adventures through Inner Space ride at Disneyland, where the coaster train would pass through a device to be visually broken up into raw energy, focused into a beam and shot into the ‘Net. There is no telling if the new concepts will bring this attraction back to life or not, but from what I’ve heard the overall plan is that once they are done the only existing attractions in Tomorrowland that will be left untouched is Buzz Lightyear. Space Mountain may finally get it’s long overdue soundtrack and the Autopia may get a dramatic update moving from just a simple car ride to something with electric cars that may actually have a story as well as an overlord control system that would bring you car to a stop briefly in certain areas to view some kind scene before giving you back control. Then there is the long in development Star Tours 2 project that will be rolled out to all the parks when it is ready. And then there is Microadventure… known elsewhere as Honey, I Shrunk The Audience. From what I’ve heard the theater will be redesigned to add some kind of new 3D show that will also include live action segments, possibily an evolution from the concepts used in the Aladdin show at DisneySea. While a new version of the Rocket Jets is also being looked at, they project isn’t just about new rides, as new shops and restaurants are also planned along with the concept of possibility of building the area up to become a two level environment. Finally, there is the unknown E factor… as in Wall-E. Plans are said to be in development for a few Wall-E attraction concepts, one of which may also include a restaurant. The kicker is waiting to see just how well Wall-E is received in Japan since the film wont open there until December. That said, this project could open anywhere between 2010-2012, or may actually open in phases over all three years. For everyone feeling left out in the USA, don’t feel bad yet as many of these same concepts are also being looked at for the next version of Tomorrowland in California as well as attractions for the other parks around the world. So for now think of Tokyo as your crystal ball to the future.

2009 - Turtle Talk - Confirmed - (5/8/09) DisneySea has confirmed an October 1st grand openieng date for Turtle Talk. (10/30/08) Oriental Land Company has announced that the next attraction coming to Tokyo Disneysea will be a new version of Turtle Talk to be located inside the S.S. Columbia, the themed ship in the American Waterfront area of the park with seating for 200. Opening in Fall 2009, guests will have an opportunity to chat with Crush, the awesome sea turtle from Finding Nemo. Versions of “Turtle Talk with Crush” have already opened at Epcot in late 2004 and later copied for Disney’s California Adventure. A portable version of Turtle Talk was put to use at Hong Kong Disneyland this past summer.
2011 - Disney’s World of Color - Rumor - (2/23/09) Laughing Place has reported that DisneySea may be looking to replace BraviSEAmo with a copy of California Adventure’s new Disney’s World of Color show in 2011.
2012 - Toy Story Mania - Confirm ed - (5/8/09) The OLC confirmed today that a copy of the popular Toy Story Mania attraction will be built in DisneySea, in the New York themed area of the American Waterfront. The new ride will be built for an estimated 11.5 billion Yen. (2/23/09) According to Blue Sky Disney, the next major attraction slated for Tokyo DisneySea will be a new version of Toy Story Midway Mania that will be placed in the American Waterfront section of the park. They also mention that this idea will delays the previous plans to build a new version of Soarin for the time being.
2013-2015 - Soarin’ - Rumor - (2/23/09) The latest word is that the Soarin’ project has been put on the backburner for now while they look at adding a couple of other projects to the park first. (5/7/07) The latest rumor claims that we likely wont see Soarin’ show up until 2011 or 2012 now, possibly as part of DisneySea’s 10th Anniversary (Sept. 4th, 2011). Between now and then, Oriental Land Company will be focused on plans for Tokyo Disneyland’s 25th Anniversary (April 15th, 2008) and the opening of the Monster’s Inc. ride in 2009. Again, Soarin’ is apparently just one of a few different attraction ideas under consideration for the park’s 10th Anniversary, so don’t count on it just yet. (5/4/07) If the latest rumors are true the Oriental Land Company is looking to add a custom version of Soarin’ somewhere in the park’s Mediterranean Harbor area. Obviously this version of the ride would have to feature a brand new ride film that would appeal to Japanese audiences.
