News & Rumors

Stone Mountain

Atlanta, GA

General News - (10/14/09) Stone Mountain will hold the 10th Annual Indian Festival and Pow Wow at the park on Nov. 5-8th. With over fifty tribes represented, guests experience hands-on demonstrations of fire making, basket weaving, hide tanning, weaponry making and cooking. Additionally, Native Americans from across the United States will gather to compete in dance and drum competitions.
(9/29/09) Check out this interesting article about a particular law in place in GA that allows for just about anyone to carry a loaded firearm on their person around most of Stone Mountain.

icon_STOP???? - Big Rock Water Park - Delayed or Canceled - (11/12/09) Looks like Big Rock Waterpark is officially dead. It seems there was still a reference to it somewhere on the Stone Mountain website, and when one of our readers wrote in to ask about it and was told, “Thanks for catching that on our website. We were working on the projects last year, but it did not proceed.”  Sounds like it’s dead to me!
(10/30/09) The latest rumor the drift down from the peak of Stone Mountain is that the Big Rock Waterpark project may have been cancelled entirely. As we’ve speculated, it does seem very likely that the Slick Rock Racer going into Dollywood actually came from Big Rock’s stockpile of delivered slide parts. According to other sources, many of the other HFE waterparks (White Water Branson & Wild Adventures) are also expecting to receiving a piece of the pie as well it seems, and anything they can’t use may be sold off.
Adding fuel to the fire, is this batch of new pictures taken just two days ago showing off the slide pieces at the Big Rock staging site. Based on a quick comparison from these new pictures with the ones I took about 14 months ago, it does look like most of the yellow/orange/red and even green slide pieces are now gone, leaving mostly the light and dark blue slide pieces on site.
(10/28/09) While I haven’t heard anything official yet, a reader tells us that during their visit to Stone Mountain over the summer, the captain of the ferry boat mentioned during the tour that Big Rock Water Park was set to open in 2013. In the meantime, if anyone is in the area, swing by and take a picture of the slide pieces they’ve still got on site. I’ve heard rumored some of those may be headed out to become new attractions at other HFE parks.
(10/26/09) Anyone heard a peep about the status of the Big Rock Waterpark at Stone Mountain? It was already previously delayed from a 2009 to 2010 opening date, but I haven’t heard a peep about any construction at all this year, despite the fact that all the slide pieces were delivered to the site back in 2008. Rumor has it that the project may be delayed for at least another year… or two. Anyone know more?
(8/29/08) While driving through Stone Mountain a couple of weeks ago I came across the site for the new Big Rock Waterpark that was originally supposed to open in 2008 but has now been delayed until 2010. However the project was far enough along in the works for 2008 before being delayed due to the drought conditions that the park has taken delivery of all of their various new waterslide pieces. There are also a couple of older dark body slides already on the property that will be incorporated into the new waterpark as well from what I’ve heard. Enjoy the photos.
(6/28/08) According to the latest rumors, Stone Mountain’s Big Rock Water Park project has been bumped back another year, now putting the grand opening in 2010. The good news is that when it opens, apparently the park will be bigger than ever and ready to take on all competition in the region.
(10/23/07) Screamscape has heard that the planned 2008 opening of the new Big Rock Water Park at Stone Mountain has been delayed until Summer 2009 due to the extreme drought in Northern Georgia.
(10/1/07) While there wont be an indoor waterpark resort, the Stone Mountain website does confirm that a “new waterpark” is under construction and will open in Summer 2008 next to the Golf Course Clubhouse. A big announcement is expected in the near future.
