LEGOLAND - Second US Park Location Merlin Entertainment / Blackstone
Legoland News - (12/31/07) According to this article, Legoland is still looking at Lee’s Summit, MO as the site for their second US theme park. After hearing several complaints about the original location they’ve been looking at alternate sites for the park complex which will include a 250 room hotel, a SeaLife Aquarium in addition to the theme park itself which should have 50 rides and attractions. Legoland was seeking an incentive of $172.5 million paid through tax increment financing which so far has been turned down so they are looking an alternate options. (7/5/07) While I haven’t heard much about the plans to build a Legoland in Lee’s Summit, it looks like there is talk about bringing a Legoland theme park to the Columbia, IL area now. Nothing solid yet to say that the park is coming, only that it was part of a proposal for a land development seeking an incentive package that was voted down 5-3. (4/19/07) Lee’s Summit TIF Commission voted Monday night 6-4 in favor of developing the Legoland theme park built in part with $159 million of public financing. Public hearings on the issue are expected to take place in May and if all goes well the park could be open by Spring 2009 with additional components to the project open by Fall 2010. (2/20/07) Legoland is hoping to push for a quick approval from the city for all their plans in order to meet a timetable that woiuld allow the new Legoland park to open in time for the 2009 season. (2/12/07) Coaster Community has posted a few preview photos of the proposed new Legoland theme park at an open house meeting held last week. This includes a few maps showing the layout and theme of the various lands that could take shape in the park which includes an Xtreme land, Pirate Shores, Imagination, Castle, Town and of course Miniland. It's also interesting to note that it also shows off a Legoland Hotel to the right of the entrance, while I just heard about a similar Legoland Hotel in planing for the California park. (2/5/07) According to MidWestInfoGuide, RED Development is holding an open house to show off the proposed Legoland the Sea Life Aqarium park projects this Wednesday. (2/5/07) A local news article claims that developers may ask for taxpayers to pay as much as 80% of the funds to build a Legoland and Sea Life Aquarium in Lee’s Summit. (1/19/07) Legoland has decided against building in Olathe, Kansas and instead is now looking at a site in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The park would become the centerpiece of a $539 million 100 acre project that would also include a Sea Life Aquarium, a sister park concept also from Merlin Entertainment. Preliminary talks have begun and a proposal is expected next month. If fast tracked, construction could actually begin as early as late summer. (8/18/06) The latest news from Olathe is that the city officials have rejected the plan that relied heavily on public subsidies to make the Legoland park and resort area happen. While they would love to see the project still happen, it’s going to take more private money. Previously the developers trying to organize the project were requesting $673 million in public funds for the $986 million resort project. This was for the entire resort project area... not just the park itself which would only be a small piece of that larger puzzle. (8/17/06) It was mentioned that if the Olathe site can swing the $787 million deal for the new Legoland theme park, the park would open by 2009. Other attractions would also spring up on the 300 acre resort site including: hotels, an arena, indoor ski slope, aquarium, and a half million square feet of retail. (8/16/06) A second Kansas City location (Olathe) is being looked at to become the next home of a Legoland theme park. You can read more here. (5/20/06) A Kansas City developer is currently looking at sites to build the nation’s second Legoland theme park to be the cornerstone of a new retail and resort area. They plan on using the state’s STAR bonds project which has been used in the past to fast track major entertainment projects like the Legends retails / entertainment area near the Kansas Speedway. Though they were only looking to build a second US park right now, they did mention that they could see building three in the US in the future by adding an East Coast and Mid-West site. If Kansas locks down the Mid-West site, then I’ve got to wonder if they are considering a site in Virginia again, as this was the site that was previously in competition with California for the first park years back. (1/20/06) In an interview about the new expansion plans at the California park, the GM of Legoland California stated that the company’s new owners are looking at sites in the US to build the fifth Legoland theme park sometime in the next 3-5 years.
